The valley is approximately 100 miles longand at its widest id 30 miles wide. Lewis and Clark traveled through this area on the expedition to the Pacific ocean in the early 19th century.
The Salish were the native tribe in this area and there are still areas here such as vision quest sites as well as pictographs and the famous Medicine Tree.
Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce escaped briefly on their futile attempt to avoid the reservation life as they traveled through the valley.
The Ne me poo trail runs through the valley also. Many of the miles on this trail look as they did in the native american days in this area.
Skiing either down hill or cross country is arguably some of the best in the world. Three groomed skiing areas are your choices for a day of skiing.
The fishing is as good as it gets without the crowds. The Bitterroot River is a fly fisherman's dream without the crowds of the Madison, Yellowstone, or Gallatin.
